“When efficiency becomes the ultimate measure of value, human beings are tempted to see themselves as a project to be optimized rather than as persons called to relationship and communion.”Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica Humanitas, §112

The night in brief

  1. The Clash of Visions: The Optimized Soul. The technocratic spirit treats a man as a commodity to be upgraded, while beneath it the restless heart longs for communion.
  2. The Magisterial Blueprint. The Incarnation and Mary’s Magnificat as the Church’s antidote to the technocratic illusion. “What saves humanity is not enhanced self-sufficiency, but a relationship that liberates, a communion that transforms” (§128).
  3. The Virtues of a Catholic Man in a Digital Age. Holy fortitude over spiritual anesthesia, and fidelity to one’s state in life after the pattern of St. Joseph.
  4. The Spiritual Combat. Temptations and pitfalls set against the graces, glories, and beauty that answer them.

Prayer

We close with the Magnificat, a litany of surrender, and five minutes of silence, phones face down.

Discussion questions

  1. The Optimized Soul: Where have you slipped into treating people as “tasks to manage” or “problems to solve” rather than souls to love? Where has your desire for control driven out your capacity for real, human presence?
  2. The Passive Spectator: When a situation became stressful, painful, or boring this past week, did you stand guard as a leader, or did you check out and numb your heart with digital novocaine?
  3. Tending the Small Plot: What is one practical “weed” (a digital distraction, a defensive reaction, or a prideful habit) you need to clear out of your life right now? How can the men in this room help you keep your ground clean?
